"I feel I have become fascinated - possibly obsessed - with pure color and form. Both horizontal and vertical horizons; the sublime movement inherent in color; and the endless landscape that becomes largely self-portraiture."
Seduced by the shapes and colors of nature she brings them into form; using delicate, blended oils, she makes visible on canvas what often cannot be fully expressed any other way. Landscapes of the soul; versions of her own interior terrain.
"Color is an expansive communicator; shape gives it form and purpose; my landscapes are a language both I and my viewer can readily understand: a language of suggestive gestures and textured simplicity. Transalating my visual passions gives me a great sense of connectedness."
As for the equine experience - "I have watched and drawn horses for as long as I can remember; watching being the essential element. Their form has always been enticing to me, but I have an abstract expressionist soul." She is often told that her horses are somewhere between heaven and earth; not necessarily of this world alone; and that they "radiate aliveness."
"My images are born of a rich visual memory, blending the splendid equine form with both figurative and abstract stylization." Her work evokes a deep energetic simplicty, and the natural, accurate action of the horse. Through vibrant colors, dynamic forms, suggestive gestures, her style communicates freedom, movement, energy and passion.
Originally from New York, and having spent many years in the real estate industry, she now lives in McCall, Idaho, with her husband, a national level soccer coach, and their three aussie-dog family.
Donna describes her style as inspired by the simple power of pure line. "I've learned that the horse expresses for me essential elements - Beauty, Power, Movement, Sensuality and Freedom. When I see the horse, this is the poetry I see." Donna's work has been inspired by a number of fine equine artists, most notably the work of Paul Brown, Sam Savitt, and Wesley Dennis, as well as the classical masters Degas, Munnings and Voss. Picasso and especially Rosa Bonheur are particular favorites of hers.
Georgia O'Keefe, Mark Rothko, Franz Marc, Masatoyo Kiski. True to form, Donna's sense of expression reveals a dynamic yet subtle affinity between woman and horse, and her own unique connection to those that run with the wind.
